Increased traffic expected as schools open for new term

Motorists across the country are bracing themselves for traffic jams this morning, as schools reopen for a new term.

SUV drivers in particular are being warned to take care on the school run, and to consider walking, cycling or taking the bus with their children instead.

Pedestrians knocked down by a compact SUV have a 70% greater risk of death. This rises to 150% for a large SUV.

Mike Kavanagh from the Irish Advanced Motorists group said drivers should also take care to try to park away from school entrances as double-parking and blocking of entrances increases the chance of accidents.
