The Galway man who was held hostage in Nigeria for 10 days is flying to London today to be reunited with his family.

Thirty-nine-year-old Bryan Fogarty, who works for the US firm Haliburton, was kidnapped with five others when an armed gang raided a nightclub in Port Harcourt earlier this month.

All six were freed on Wednesday night, but it is unclear whether any ransom was paid to their captors.

Kidnappings of foreign oil industry employees have become common in Nigeria, where there resentment towards multi-national companies that make millions extracting oil from impoverished areas.

Most of the victims are usually freed within days after their employers agree to pay a ransom.
