Irish return to heroes' welcomes from Transplant Games

Ireland's 26-strong team of athletes have returned to a rousing homecoming following their outstanding success at the recent European Transplant and Dialysis Games.

The Irish team picked up nine gold medals, 18 silver and 33 bronze at the event in Hungary, leaving them fourth overall on the medals table.

They received a heroes' welcome from family, friends and supporters on their return to Dublin Airport last night.

Twenty-two of the Irish athletes have undergone organ transplants, while the other four are undergoing dialysis.

They competed in a range of events including track and field, swimming, cycling, volleyball and tennis.

Speaking last night, team manager Colin White described the experience as unforgettable and said it showed the huge difference that an organ transplant can make to someone's life.
