Mountjoy protest at jailing of father over ‘unfair’ child support

A demonstration is taking place outside Mountjoy prison against the jailing of a man for failing to pay child support.

The jan was imprisoned for failing to pay €1,500 a month to support his ex-partner's three children, although his wages amount to only €2,000 a month.

The Unmarried Fathers of Ireland group claims the man is being illegally held, as he only has one child and therefore should have had to pay €600 a month.

Spokesperson Ray Kelly said that given the recent series of violent attacks within Mountjoy, it is outrageous that this man should be locked up there.
