12-year-old boy killed in Galway fire

A 12-year-old boy is dead following an overnight house fire in Galway.

The blaze broke out at Laurel Park in the city at around 3am this morning.

The boy's 35-year-old mother and ten-year-old sister managed to escape from the house, but the boy was found in an upstairs room by fire service personnel.

He was taken to University College Hospital where he died.

Gardaí are at the scene which has been preserved for technical examination.

A post mortem examination will be carried out later today.
