BCI to introduce new advertising regulations

New rules regulating radio and television advertisements will come into effect from next year.

Today the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland launched the draft advertising code which bans advertisements for smoking cures, cosmetic surgery and psychic services.

There will also be strict rules on ads promoting alcohol, betting, medical and slimming products.

The code is designed to protect the consumer and ensure ads are transparent and do not offend.

Chairman of the BCI Conor Maguire said today: “It's a comprehensive document that covers the principle ideas behind the idea of regulating advertising. It goes into specifics and sets out how the general principles are related to alcohol and food.”
