Four quizzed over partygoer murder attempt

Three men and a juvenile were arrested today by detectives investigating an attack in the North in which a civil servant was critically injured.

Paul McCauley, 29, was beaten unconscious at a friend’s going-away party in the Waterside area of Derry.

Police confirmed today that they were treating the attack as attempted murder.

Mr McCauley, a Catholic, suffered serious head injuries when he was kicked and punched as he sat in the garden of a house at Chapel Road after a barbecue. Loyalists from a nearby estate were later blamed.

At one stage it was feared he might not survive the attack on July 16, but he remains in a coma and seriously ill.
