Cigarettes and chewing gum major sources of litter

Cigarettes and chewing gum are the major causes of litter, according to the National Litter Pollution Monitoring System.

The system shows an increase in clean areas but indicated that pedestrians are the biggest cause of the litter problem.

Cigarette butts, food-related litter including chewing gum, packaging such as takeaway wrappers and paper litter, including bank slips, bus tickets and newspapers are the main problems identified nationally.
