Gardaí have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man's ear was severed in Co Mayo this morning.

Gardaí have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man's ear was severed in Co Mayo this morning.

The man - a traveller in his twenties - was attacked by a group of up to six men at around 11am.

He was in his caravan with his two-year-old child when he was attacked by the men, some of whom were armed with knives.

The victim was rushed to Mayo General Hospital following the incident, but was then transferred to University Hospital Galway.

Gardaí have not had any success in locating the man's missing ear.
