Ahern refuses to answer questions on Hep C compensation
The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has refused to answer Dáil questions about new legislation being introduced by the Government on compensation for victims of the blood scandal.
When publishing the bill last week, the Tánaiste and Health Minister Mary Harney said it was designed to provide insurance cover for haemophiliacs infected with HIV and Hepatitis via contaminated blood products supplied by the State.
However, groups representing haemophiliacs are demanding that the legislation be withdrawn, saying it will restrict the victims' right to compensation.
Labour Party TD Liz McManus attempted to raise the matter during Order of Business in the Dáil today, but the Ceann Comhairle refused to allow her to do so.
He eventually conceded to the demands, but the Taoiseach then backed down and refused to answer questions on the matter.
