Work to start on Dublin docklands train station

Iarnród Éireann has announced its intention to begin work this week on a new train station in Dublin's booming docklands area.

The company has secured final planning permission for the project, which will be the first new station in the city centre since Tara Street was built in 1890.

The €28m station will serve the thousands of people who live and work in the new apartment blocks and office complexes in the docklands, many of which are still under construction.

Iarnód Éireann says it will make the docklands accessible from Maynooth in just 40 minutes and will also allow passengers to link up with the planned LUAS extension to the IFSC.

The company also says the new station, which is scheduled to open by the middle of next year, will allow for up to five million extra rail journeys every year and will remove around 2,500 cars from the roads every day.
