Thousands to attend Haughey’s State funeral in Dublin

One of the biggest State funerals in Irish history will take place at midday today when former Taoiseach Charles Haughey is laid to rest.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the funeral at Our Lady of Consolation Church in the Donnycarney area of north Dublin.

Flags have been flying at half mast and books of condolences have been open around the country since Mr Haughey lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday morning.

His brother Fr Owen Haughey will be the principal celebrant at today's funeral Mass and will be joined by the Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin.

Among those providing the readings will be Fianna Fáil TD Brian Lenihan and Mr Haughey's daughter Eimear.

Brendan Kennelly will also read a poem at the Mass, while Finbar Fury will perform the Lonesome Boatman.

Mr Haughey is due to be buried at St Fintan's Cemetery in Sutton, with current Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern giving the graveside oration.
