Drowned man named as local GAA star in Mayo

The man who drowned in a river in Co Mayo yesterday has been named locally as Aidan McDonnell.

The man who drowned in a river in Co Mayo yesterday has been named locally as Aidan McDonnell.

The 25-year-old was a prominent local GAA player from Ballina.

The accident happened when Mr McDonnell and a friend took a boat out onto the River Moy early yesterday morning.

The boat overturned but the second man was able to swim to the river bank.

A passer-by alerted emergency services at around 3.45am.

Divers located the body and brought it ashore.
