Minister for Justice Michael McDowell is to rush emergency legislation on statutory rape through the Dáil and Seanad on Friday, it emerged tonight.

The Cabinet had planned to recall the Dáil from its recess next week to address the issue but the embattled Minister McDowell revealed that all stages of the new law will be pushed through the Oireachtas before the weekend.
