No immediate end in sight for Afghan hunger strike

Afghan asylum seekers at St Patrick’s Cathedral have entered their seventh day of protest.

Afghan asylum seekers at St Patrick’s Cathedral have entered their seventh day of protest.

The men have threatened to commit suicide unless the Government gives them asylum.

Last night some of the men began refusing water again. Yesterday, the Health Service Executive was forced to intervene in the case and went to court to make eight underage minors wards of the State.

Following unsuccessful mediation talks, a number of men threatened to throw themselves from the organ loft in the cathedral.

It is understood that Church of Ireland officials are now pursuing legal options to remove the men from the church.
