Govt accused of complacency over electoral register
The Labour Party has accused the Government of adopting a "shocking state of complacency" in relation to the election register.
The party was responding to a study by Fianna Fáil supporters, which found widespread inaccuracies in the register for the Dublin South East constituency.
The study found that up to 15,000 people be included on the register despite being dead or no longer resident in the area.
Labour TD Ruairí Quinn said today that he and his colleagues had attempted to raise such concerns on numerous occasions in the Dáil, but they had been repeatedly dismissed by the Government.
He said the latest example of the Government's complacency was its decision to vote down a Labour motion last week calling for the establishment of an office to oversee voter lists and measures to allow PPS numbers to be used to compile a new register.
