The latest figures have shown that 395 people were waiting on trolleys in accident and emergency departments across the country today.

The figures, which were released this afternoon by the Irish Nurses Organisation, have shown 191 patients on trolleys in Dublin alone, 48 of whom were in Tallaght Hospital.

The count came just 24 hours after Tánaiste Mary Harney described overcrowding in emergency rooms as "a national emergency".
