Bridge shut in Derry amid chemical alert
One of Northern Ireland’s best known bridges was closed to traffic today amid fears of possible chemical spillage.
The alert began on the Foyle Bridge in Derry after a lorry overturned.
Police in the city said the lorry overturned close to the Caw Roundabout.
“A potential chemical spillage is being checked,” the PSNI confirmed.
Fire service personnel were investigating whether there was a chemical spill on the bridge.
SDLP councillor Martin Reilly was thankful no-one had been killed during the accident.
“Fortunately this accident has not been fatal,” he said.
“Drivers will be aware of what has happened in the past. When the Foyle Bridge has been closed due to high winds, traffic has been affected.”
