Indiscipline report stops short of proposing legal change

A task force appointed by the Government to investigate school indiscipline has reportedly stopped short of recommending legal changes to tackle the matter.

Reports this morning said the body was recommending a range of new measures to deal with unruly pupils in a report due to be published by Minister for Education Mary Hanafin today.

However, it is not proposing changes like an amendment to the controversial section of the Education Act that allows pupils to successfully appeal against an expulsion.

Teachers had sought tough legal changes to address what they claim is a growing crisis in schools across the country.
