Two gardaí have escaped injury after being shot at in the St Mary's Park area of Limerick in the early hours of this morning.

Two gardaí have escaped injury after being shot at in the St Mary's Park area of Limerick in the early hours of this morning.

The uniformed officers were sitting in a patrol car at the scene of an earlier shooting on St Munchin's Street when they were targeted by a gunman who opened fire on them from a distance.

The man fired around five shots in their direction, but the patrol car was not hit and neither garda was injured.

The shooting happened at around 4.30am.
