Last-ditch effort to save NEC jobs fails
A last-ditch effort to prevent job losses at NEC Semiconductors in Co Meath has failed.
More than 350 people at the plant are to be let go after the company announced it is to close its factory in Ballivor and move production to Asia.
Officials from SIPTU ,along with Minister Noel Dempsey, have concluded a meeting with executives from NEC in London.
Minister Dempsey says they will not be reversing their decision: “The approach we adopted was to and get them to reverse their decision, but it’s quite clear from the discussions that they would not reverse the decision.
"Announcements had been made and unions members and the workers there were anxious to find out the reason why and try and get explanations.
“The decision isn’t reversible.”
