SF slams Paisley remarks about 'IRA-linked lawyers'

Sinn Féin has attacked DUP leader Ian Paisley over his claim that many lawyers in the North are involved in IRA money-laundering.

Sinn Féin has attacked DUP leader Ian Paisley over his claim that many lawyers in the North are involved in IRA money-laundering.

Dr Paisley made the claim yesterday following talks with British prime minister Tony Blair in London, saying the information was based on police briefings.

Sinn Féin spokesman Gerry Kelly has condemned the DUP leader for making the statement, which he described as irresponsible and dangerous.

Mr Kelly said the DUP leader's remarks were similar to comments made by a British minister shortly before Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane was murdered by loyalists in 1989.

The Law Society in the North, meanwhile, is seeking a meeting with the PSNI and the Assets Recovery Agency to discuss the matter.
