Four questioned over man's stabbing

Three men and a woman were being quizzed tonight after a stabbing in Waterford city.

A man in his 50s is critically ill at Waterford Regional Hospital after the incident on Olaf Street.

The victim, who is understood to live at a local hostel, sustained injuries to his neck and head.

The four people are being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for an initial period of up to six hours.

The incident happened behind the City Square shopping centre at approximately 12.30pm.

Witnesses said the victim staggered down the street and collapsed.

Gardaí sealed off a number of streets where the incident took place.
