Teenager charged with murder of English man

A 17-year-old boy arrested in connection with the killing of an English man last September was today brought before the Dublin Children’s Court and charged with murder.

The Tallaght teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at the Children’s Court this morning and was charged with the murder of Mr James Burke, a 21-year-old Londoner, at Liffey Valley, in Clondalkin, west Dublin, on September 23 last.

Garda Sergeant Noel Doolan, of Ronanstown Station, told Judge Angela Ni Chonduin the teen was charged at the courthouse in the presence of his mother and made no reply after he was cautioned.

A previous manslaughter charge was withdrawn on the application of the State.

Judge Ni Chonduin granted legal aid to the boy, who was supported in court by his mother and sister.

The court was told that the book of evidence in the case was currently being drafted.

The judge remanded the boy in custody to St Patrick’s Institution to appear again next week.
