Rail users have slammed the 3.8% fare increase that came into force on all inter-city, commuter and DART services this morning.

The Commuter North Rail Users Group, which is based in the north-east of the country, said the increases were totally unjustified.

Spokesman Brian Hanratty said Iarnród Éireann was already generating more revenue by packing extra passengers into its trains.

"They've taken seats out of carriages so that more people can stand, so we're getting less comfort and paying more for it," he said.
