Former Northern Secretary Merlyn Rees has died in hospital in London at the age of 85.

Former Northern Secretary Merlyn Rees has died in hospital in London at the age of 85.

The Labour politician held the post between March 1974 and September 1976, under the governments of both Harold Wilson and James Callaghan.

His family said he had suffered a number of falls and had lapsed into a coma, from which he never recovered.
