25-year-old charged with assaulting Dublin stab victim

A 25-year-old Dublin man has appeared in court charged with assaulting another man who died of stab wounds in the north of the city over the weekend.

Karl Breen, who is originally from Clondalkin but living at Kearnscourt in Kilmainham, is accused of assault causing serious harm to 21-year-old Martin McLoughlin.

Mr McLoughlin, from Cherrywood Park in Clondalkin, died on Monday after being stabbed during a row at a hotel near Croke Park in the early hours of New Year's Day.

A garda witness told Dublin District Court today that the accused said "sorry" when formally charged with assault in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí objected to bail and Mr Breen was remanded in custody to reappear in court on Friday, when a fresh bail application is expected to be made.
