McDowell to consider new laws on criminal assets

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell will consider bringing in new laws to ensure gangsters convicted in the Special Criminal Court can be stripped of the proceeds of crime, it emerged tonight.

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell will consider bringing in new laws to ensure gangsters convicted in the Special Criminal Court can be stripped of the proceeds of crime, it emerged tonight.

Following a ruling that the non-jury court does not have the power to order the confiscation of assets, Mr McDowell said legislation could be amended.
