Murdered immigrant's mother flies in to identify son

The mother of a murdered Moldovan man has flown to Dublin to formally identify his body, it emerged today.

Vladislav Garuta, 28, was fatally assaulted outside in Islandbridge three weeks ago.

He had been living in Ireland for two years and worked in the construction industry.

Superintendent Eddie Quirke, who is leading the investigation, said Ms Garuta and her son had flown into Dublin to formally identify the body.

“Arrangements are being made at the moment to repatriate the body,” he said.

Mr Garuta had been attending a party in Islandbridge on November 27 and was assaulted at around 9.15pm.

He was assaulted again at a section of open ground at Park Place, and staggered to the apartment complex at Bridgewater Quay 200 metres away and asked residents there for help.

He was taken to St James’s Hospital for treatment for serious head injuries but died later.

Superintendent Quirke said that detectives in the investigation had received good co-operation from members of the Moldovan, Russian and Lithuanian communities

“But there are a few people out there who may have vital information and that we haven’t talked to.

"So we’re appealing to them to come forward,” he said.

Gardaí believe that non-nationals were responsible for the assaults on Mr Garuta but are keeping an open mind on the motive.

Anybody with information is asked to contact the incident room at Kilmainham Garda Station on 01-6669749 or 01-6669750 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111.
