Traveller wins appeal against murder conviction

A 30-year-old New Age traveller has won the appeal against his conviction for the murder of a Portuguese man in Co. Waterford in 2002.

Stuart Spicer formerly of Ballyquinn, was jailed for life two years ago when he was found guilty of beating Sergio Abru to death at a caravan park in Clashanahy.

Two other men involved in the row are serving time for the manslaughter of Mr Abru.

In court today, Stuart Spicer’s lawyers successfully argued that the jury should have been given the option of considering the defence of provocation.
