North: Law recognising gay marriage comes into force
Gay couples in Britain and the North can get married from today under new legislation that has just come into force.
The Civil Partnership Act, which took effect today, gives official recognition to homosexual or civil unions.
At least two gay couples have already applied to hold ceremonies under the legislation in Belfast and Derry.
The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network in the Republic is now calling on the Irish Government to introduce similar measures.
