Police release four arrested in relation to 1972 bombings

Police in the North have released the four people they arrested earlier this week in connection with an IRA bomb attack in the Co Derry village of Claudy 33 years ago.

Sinn Féin Assemblyman Francie Brolly and freelance GAA commentator Seamus Mullen were among the three men and woman arrested on Tuesday morning.

They were questioned about the detonation of three no-warning car bombs in Claudy in July 1972, which killed six adults and three children.

However, all four were released without charge last night pending the compilation of a file for the Public Prosecution Service.

Sinn Féin had strongly criticised the arrest of Mr Brolly, accusing the PSNI of carrying it out for political reasons.
