Domestic-violence aid needs radical improvement

A Fianna Fáil representative has said that more needs to be done to highlight domestic violence here.

Recent figures from the National Crime Council show that 15 percent, or one in seven women, have experienced abusive behaviour, and a reported six percent of men have been abused by women.

The group reported last summer that 213 thousand women and 88 thousand men had been abused annually by a partner.

Senator White White says support groups are struggling to cope, and that only two out of five calls to the organisation are answered because of lack of funding.

She added that children are the ones who are really suffering because of this and that regional, private family courts must be brought into operation.
