Prisoner in serious condition after Mountjoy stabbing

A 26-year-old prisoner is in a serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed at Mountjoy jail this morning.

The Dublin man, who is serving a two-month sentence for drug possession, was attacked during recreation time in the prison yard shortly after 11am.

He was stabbed several times in the upper body and neck and is in intensive care at the nearby Mater Hospital.

The area where the attack occurred has been sealed off for forensic examination.
