Gardaí have appealed to the public to help identify the body of a man which was found on a beach in Co Clare today.

The Doolin Coastguard Unit discovered the body on Doolin Beach at 6.50am after an extensive search was launched yesterday.

Gardaí at Ennistymon described the man as in his late 20s or early 30s, over 6ft tall, of athletic build, with short brown hair and wearing a blue or green jumper, with red and white stripes.

Gardaí said an identifying factor could be the man was wearing a yellow t-shirt with 'Monterrey' on it.

“We have no idea as to who it might be. Some family is missing someone and they don't even know,” a garda at Ennistymon Station said. “We are appealing for anyone who knows someone who is missing to contact us at 065 707 2180.”

The Doolin coastguard boat and shore search parties were dispatched yesterday after a windsurfer reported seeing what he believed was a body in the water.

The search was called off last night but resumed at first light this morning.
