A body found in a field in Co Clare this morning is believed to be that of a small-time Limerick criminal recently released from prison.

A passer-by made the discovery near the church in Parteen village, eight miles from Limerick city, at 8.30am.

It is understood the victim suffered a gunshot wound to his back.

Gardaí have sealed off the immediate area and the State pathologist is carrying out a preliminary examination of the body at the scene.

Garda sources at the scene believe the body is that of a petty criminal in his mid-20s from the Southhill area of Limerick city who was recently released from prison.

A Garda spokesperson said that an extensive search of the locality is being conducted out by detectives.

“We appeal to anybody who noticed suspicious activity in the area to contact us,” she added.

Detectives at Mayorstone Garda Station in Limerick city are investigating the incident.
