Drugs body considers medicinal use of cannabis

The National Advisory Committee on Drugs (NACD) has said we could see cannabis being used for medical purposes in Ireland in the future.

The National Advisory Committee on Drugs (NACD) has said we could see cannabis being used for medical purposes in Ireland in the future.

A recent survey by the group has found that the majority of people would be comfortable with using the drug for medical reasons.

Director of the NACD Mairead Lyons said a new synthetic product is in clinical trials to "fully understand and appreciate the benefit of cannabis" for medical use.

She said that if those trials are successful, a product may be developed, but it was too early to judge yet.
