School-leavers from north Dublin are significantly less likely to go to college, according to a group set up to promote enterprise and development in the area.

The Northside Partnership said less than one-eighth of children from certain parts of north Dublin went on to third-level education, compared to more than half of the general population.

The group said a combination of social and economic factors were to blame, with many people in the locality pessimistic about their educational and employment prospects.

The figures were released today to coincide with the launch of a scholarship scheme to support students from low income families.
