Scottish man may lose eye after Limerick attack

A Scottish man is in danger of losing his eye after a vicious assault in Limerick city.

The victim, who is in his 20s, was walking through the Johnsgate area of Limerick city at 9.30pm last night with two others when they were jumped by a group of people who had been drinking in a nearby green.

It's understood the Scottish man received the serious eye injury when he tried to help one of his friends who was being assaulted.

At least six people were involved and bottles and bricks were used as weapons during the attack.

The Scottish man and another man in his 20s were taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital immediately after the incident. Neither suffered life-threatening injuries but gardaí say the Scottish man - who is working in Limerick - was due to undergo surgery today to try to save his eye.

Detectives were carrying out inquiries in the Johnsgate area this morning and gardaí have appealed to anyone who witnessed the row to contact Henry Street garda station.

"This was a very serious incident and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed it to contact us with any information which could help us with our inquiries," said a garda spokesman.
