Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain was urged today to find a “meaningful role” for local politicians while the North waits to see if the IRA really does disarm and commit to exclusively democratic means.

Sir Reg Empey, the new Ulster Unionist Party leader, met Mr Hain at Stormont to tell him he had to act by the autumn at the latest.
