Revenue catches County Council for under-declaring VAT

New figures show the Revenue Commissioners received almost €22m from settlements arising from its inquiries into bogus non-resident and other off shore accounts in the first quarter of the year.

They included South Dublin County Council and a Roscommon doctor, who paid almost €1.5m.

The council had under-declared VAT, and was detected as a result of a revenue audit.

It settled for €76,000 in unpaid VAT, plus €30,000 in interest and penalties.

Roscommon doctor Eugene Hardiman from Roosky, who held a bogus non-resident account, made a settlement of €1.5m.

Bogus non-resident account holders paid over €14m.

One NIB account holder settled for over €0.5m, while an Ansbacher account holder settled for €0.6m.
