Six fire engines rushed to the scene at Adelaide Road in the city centre at around 6am.

A spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade said: “Three cars went on fire in a basement car park. Thick smoke spread throughout the building and the apartment block had to be evacuated. The fire was confined to the basement.”

There were no injuries.

“We have no idea how it started. Gardaí will be investigating,” the spokesman added.
