Garda Commissioner urged to quit by Barron family

The family of the man whose death led to the Morris Tribunal is calling for Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy to resign.

54-year-old Ritchie Barron was killed in Raphoe, county Donegal in October 1996 in a suspected hit-and-run.

The subsequent garda investigation into his death, which falsely accused two men of murder, was found to be prejudiced and negligent.

Buncrana solicitor Paudge Dorian said the Barron family want the commissioner to resign as he was the assistant commissioner in charge of crime and security at the time of the investigation of Mr Barron's death.

Mr Dorian said also that the family were hurt by senior gardaĂ referring to Mr Barron as a "drunken cattle-dealer" while giving evidence at the Morris tribunal.

The move will increase the pressure on Mr Conroy, who oversaw the controversial internal investigation into garda corruption in Donegal.
