Gardaí were today investigating a suspicious fire at a pub in Limerick city.

The blaze at Brannigan’s pub on Mulgrave Street broke out shortly after 4am and the interior was extensively damaged.

A Garda spokesman said the cause of the fire was being investigated.

“A full technical examination will be carried out,” he said.

Last month, 27-year-old Wayne Dundon was jailed for 10 years at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court for threatening to kill a barman at the pub.

Dundon made the shape of a gun with his hand and pointing it at the head of Ryan Lee, 19, last December saying: “F**k you, you’re dead“.

Half an hour after the threat was made, a man wearing a helmet walked into the pub and shot Mr Lee in the knee and the hip.

Ryan Lee and the family that owns the pub have been under Garda protection since the incident.
