A man was shot and seriously injured in a cemetery in Northern Ireland early today.

A man was shot and seriously injured in a cemetery in Northern Ireland early today.

The victim, in his 20s, was discovered in the Redburn Cemetery in Holywood, Co Down, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken to hospital where his condition was reported to be serious.

A Police Service spokeswoman said the injured man was discovered by officers after they mounted a search when a local resident raised the alarm after hearing a shot shortly after 2.30am.

The area around the cemetery was sealed off for forensic examination today.

The police spokeswoman said no weapon had been found at the scene of the shooting.
