One person is feared dead following a chemical explosion at a water treatment plant in the North today.

A number of other people were injured in the blast at Carmoney Waterworks near Eglinton, Co Derry.

The fire brigade and ambulance authorities have declared a major emergency.

Staff at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry also put a huge emergency plan into operation.

Police urged residents around the scene of the explosion to stay inside and close all doors and windows.
