A British charity has officially launched a new free-phone helpline where Irish people can report the abuse and mistreatment of elderly people.

The helpline (1800 940 010) was set up by Action on Elder Abuse, which already operates an identical service in England, Scotland, Wales and the North.

The charity said all calls would be treated confidentially and organisers would liaise with the Health Service Executive to follow up on allegations of mistreatment.
