DPP seeks legislation paving way for DNA database
The Director of Public Prosecutions has reportedly called for legislation paving the way for the establishment of a national DNA database.
Reports this morning said James Hamilton made the call at the annual National Prosecutors Conference over the weekend.
Mr Hamilton reportedly wants the database to go further than that proposed by the Law Reform Commission, which said the system should only include people jailed for criminal offences.
However, this morning’s reports said the DPP believed this would not be enough as many crimes, particularly organised crimes, were committed by people with no criminal records.
