Labour backs calls for independent probe of Lusk shootings
The Labour Party has backed calls for an independent inquiry into the shooting dead of two post office raiders by gardaí in north Co Dublin yesterday.
The Gardaí have insisted the pair were shot after they refused to lay down their weapons, but only one of the raiders was armed, raising questions about the need for the shooting.
The Force has established an internal investigation, but Amnesty International has already called for an independent inquiry to establish the facts of the matter.
Labour TD Joe Costello said he agreed with this stance.
"To clear the air, to satisfy everybody that the circumstances in which the shooting took place were proper, procedures were followed and all the rest of it, it is important that there be an independent inquiry," he said.
