Three men have been arrested after a failed raid this morning at a post office in Lusk, north Co Dublin in which one man was killed and another was seriously injured.

Five would-be raiders arrived at the post office shortly after 8am when it opened for business. Gardaí had had the post office under surveillance and were waiting inside for the raiders.

A number of shots were exchanged and one of the raiders - a man in his 40s who was known to gardaí - was shot dead. Another was seriously injured. Both men were taken from the scene to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where the man in his 40s was pronounced dead.

The other three men were arrested and are being held at garda stations in the Dublin area.

Chief Superintendent Kevin Ludlow has been appointed to head up the investigation into this morning's events.
